On World Smile Day® 2001 the Worcester Common was filled with sidewalk chalk artists creating smiling works of art under the guidance of Sidewalk Sam.
2001 brought more challenges to the day, what with the passing of Harvey Ball earlier in the year and, coming as it did in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. But Worcester rallied to create its version of smiley face street art under the supervision of renowned street artist Sidewalk Sam. Dozens of local organizations gathered outdoors under sunny skies on the Worcester Common to create messages of hope and peace.
